It was a good news/bad news kind of day...

I know it's only 1646, but it's been that type of day. Today we found out for sure that we will be PCSing next month to our new duty station in Georgia. Today we also found out that we have to do a full DITY move. From what I understand, there are a lot of people PCSing (moving to a new duty station) and ETSing (getting out of the Army). Our post has a new transportation policy. They are only doing so many moves and we are not one of those moves. Yes, we got rejected! I didn't even know they could do that.

I now have the rest of the month to pack everything, turn everything off, rent a UHaul, get oil changes in both vehicles, clean the apartment, and everything else that comes with moving. I think my mantra for the next month is going to be TOO BLESSED TOO BE STRESSED!!! I have begun making my to do list. The first thing I will be doing is going through clothes, shoes, books, etc to see what we can get rid of. We haven't been in this apartment very long (since M got back in March), so we shouldn't have accumulated too much stuff. I know there will be a few things that we can get rid of though.

I am open to any and all suggestions/tips on doing a full DITY move. I hope everyone had/is having a great Tuesday.

That is a lot to handle! I think you can do it though :) That mantra is my husband's.

We did something like a DITY move when I married my husband and moved to be with him. 2 days before our wedding, we packed up a trailer we borrowed from some friends, and my husband's uncle drove it down with us. Unfortunately we didn't have any type of downtime after the wedding, so we drove 24 hours straight to El Paso. It was REALLY hard but worth it. Hopefully you can kick back a bit during your move!

What a mess. My inlaws PCS'd with one of those PODS instead of a UHaul and they said that is the only way they would move from now on.

And I didn't realize they would reject you on a move either. Interesting.

Yikes! Set small goals so that you don't have to rush in the end. I'll divide the house in to areas and do one area a day until it's finished. This keeps me from becoming exhausted(and packing things poorly). You'll finish before you know it. Also, if something has the potential to spill/leak I DO NOT pack it. Saving a few bucks on buying a new container of olive oil is not worth the hassle if it spills and leaks on everything.

Good luck!

I didn't know that they could reject to move you. That's really interesting!

And a DITY move can be stressful, especially with the time you were given, but you can do this. Just sit down and make an attack plan. Write down what needs to be done, and then put it all in order with dates next to each thing that needs to be done by a certain date. This will help you keep from losing your mind or feeling like you're going to lose your mind during the whole process.

Also, make sure when your husband gets his orders cut for the new duty station that his unit he's leaving puts in his 10 days worth of permissive TDY after he signs in. That's pretty much the only way he'll get guaranteed it once you guys get there. If he waits to do it once he gets to his new unit and signs in, it's up to his new unit on whether they'll grant him TDY for you to find a house and how many days they're willing to give to you.

I have never heard of this policy! I thought they had to accommodate you! I know you can do it, it will be stressful, but you can do it! The other good news is full DITY moves are very lucrative!

We did a full DITY our last move. We moved MOVEX which means they drive it. It was a pain but not horrible...

Oh man!! When I read your email I was wondering why you guys got rejected and had to do a DITY move! :( Bum deal but remember to BREATHE!!

Also, DH PCSed here via a full DITY and he used a Penske truck cause it uses diesel and they give military and AAA discounts.

DH had to pay everything out of pocket and got reimbursed at his next duty station so for him, being able to save was important!
